The Soul of Austin is a free cultural guide to Austin, Texas, written by John Kim Austin and released on May 15, 2026. In 69 pages it explains how a laid-back college town on the Colorado River became one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, and asks what that growth means for the music, food, neighborhoods and independent spirit that made people love it in the first place.

It is not a travel guide, and it is not a complete history. As the introduction puts it, entire libraries already exist on Texas history, Austin politics, architecture and music. The book aims instead at the deeper personality of Austin: the culture, traditions, landmarks, neighborhoods and ideas that continue shaping the city today.

What the Book Covers

The guide opens with an introduction and moves through eleven chapters, each of which can be read on its own.

IntroductionWhy Austin Captures the Imagination
Why a city that changed this quickly still holds such a strong place in the American imagination, and the question the rest of the book keeps returning to: what exactly is Austin now?
Chapter 1Before Austin Became Austin
The geography of the Colorado River valley, the Native peoples who lived there for thousands of years, and the settlement known as Waterloo that became the capital of Texas.
Chapter 2The University That Changed the City
How the University of Texas, which opened in 1883, gave Austin a permanent flow of students, scholars, writers and political thinkers, and built a city around ideas as much as commerce.
Chapter 3Music Built Austin
How clubs, dance halls, radio and audiences who valued live performance made the Live Music Capital of the World, and how that differed from Nashville, Los Angeles and New York.
Chapter 4Food, BBQ, and the Austin Experience
Central Texas barbecue, Tex-Mex and the food-truck culture, and why eating in Austin has always been social, competitive and personal.
Chapter 5Keep Austin Weird
The slogan widely credited to Red Wassenich, and the philosophy behind it: protect local businesses and the independent spirit during growth.
Chapter 6Silicon Hills
How university talent and a once-low cost of living turned Austin into a technology center, and what that did to the city around it.
Chapter 7Old Austin vs. New Austin
What longtime residents say they miss, why the debate runs so deep, and why both versions of the city are real.
Chapter 8The Neighborhoods That Define Austin
South Congress and the other districts whose separate histories and personalities add up to the city's layered identity.
Chapter 9Why People Continue to Move to Austin
The economic, cultural and personal reasons new residents keep arriving from California, New York, Florida, Illinois and beyond.
Chapter 10Can Austin Keep Its Soul?
Housing, transportation, music venues and neighborhood preservation, all framed by one question: can the city grow without losing what made people care about it?
Chapter 11What Makes Austin Different
A capital, a college town, a music city and a technology hub at once, and the tension that has defined Austin from the start.

Who the Book Is For

The guide is written for three kinds of reader. Longtime Austinites will recognize the small music clubs, local bookstores and affordable neighborhoods of an earlier city, and the book takes their sense of loss seriously. Newcomers who know only the modern skyline will find the history behind the slogans and the places they now live in. Visitors and readers elsewhere will get a clear account of why Austin occupies the place it does in the American imagination, and why its residents argue about it so passionately.
